Mononcle
At one time, ‘mononcle’ was a friendly and endearing term used to address the brothers of one’s parents. It was our grandfathers, our uncles, our cousins, our brothers-in-law, all those men we grew up with Quebec who made it their own. But lately, ‘mononcle’ has acquired some rather nasty connotations, including lecherous, immoral, and unreliable. More than a bit miffed after he himself was called a ‘mononcle,’ Fabien Cloutier decided it was time to take a closer look at the phenomenon with the help of several live specimens and experts in the field. The upshot is a sociological-humoristic survey that explores the meaning of Quebec masculinity by delving into many of its darkest recesses.
